This is one of the most common questions I get asked: "How often should I come in?" The answer is — it genuinely depends. Your ideal massage frequency is determined by your training volume, the type of activity you do, your injury history, your recovery capacity, and your goals.
Let me break it down properly so you can make an informed decision for your situation.
For Competitive and Recreational Athletes
High-volume training (5+ sessions per week)
If you're training seriously — whether that's Hyrox prep, marathon training, CrossFit, or team sports — fortnightly massage during your build phase is ideal. This keeps muscles supple, identifies overuse patterns before they become injuries, and supports the quality of your recovery between hard sessions.
In the 4–6 weeks leading up to a key race or competition, moving to weekly sessions can make a significant performance and recovery difference.
Moderate training (3–4 sessions per week)
Monthly massage is a good baseline, with more frequent sessions during periods of increased load — before a busy race block or after a particularly gruelling training camp.
For People with Specific Injury or Pain Goals
If you're coming to address a specific issue — persistent lower back pain, a recurring shoulder problem, chronic hamstring tightness — the initial phase typically involves more frequent sessions: weekly or fortnightly for 4–6 weeks, then reducing to monthly maintenance once the condition has improved.
The most common mistake people make is waiting until something hurts before booking. Sports massage is most effective as a preventative tool — catching issues early, before they turn into injuries that stop you training altogether.
For Desk Workers and Everyday Wellbeing
Even if you're not an athlete, the postural demands of desk work — forward head position, tight hip flexors from sitting, tension through the upper traps and shoulders — respond very well to monthly massage. Many of my clients who don't consider themselves "sporty" find that a monthly session keeps the common aches of modern work life completely manageable.
